Project 1 - Raptor > GPS Mount

Every time we go 4 wheeling we notice more and more Jeep owners using GPS systems. Most are handhelds and some are vehicle-mounted designs. Although it's not required, GPS will help you find places you might not otherwise find and just might help keep you from getting lost. At the 2002 Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari, a friend of ours named Scott let us borrow his spare GPS handheld for the GPS treasure hunt. Although we didn't make it to the treasure in time, the GPS system helped us see what trail we came in on so we could easily find our way back to it. Then, for my birthday in May 2002, my father-in-law bought me an eTrex Venture by Garmin (he has one also) and ever since, things haven't been the same.

Rather than spending time talking about GPS systems and why you should buy one, I'd rather talk about how we use ours and how we ended up mounting it for convenience and safety. Since our eTrex Venture is a handheld unit, we usually ended up sitting it in the center console in a cup holder or even sitting on a leg (NOT effective on bumps :-)).

I happened upon a GPS mount bracket on eBay which got me started thinking about R-A-M Mounts. The bracket attached to the windshield hinge on either the driver or passenger side and had holes to bolt a R-A-M Mount ball to. Cost: $5, plus shipping. Next, I needed to purchase the R-A-M Mount attachments and a cradle for my eTrex Venture. I bought mine from a company called Cycoactive, although there are several other online stores where these can be purchased.
